ROCK Employee Spotlight: Becky Murphy, Director of Marketing

Becky Murphy and her husband, Cyril, on the southern coast of Ireland.

WHAT LED YOU TO A CAREER IN MARKETING?  Well, that’s a long story! After exercising racehorses for a living for all of my young adult years, once I hit my 30s I thought, hey, this might be a great time to get a job that provides health insurance! I worked in nonprofit for a few years in Baltimore, then moved to commercial real estate as an assistant, was offered a job in marketing, and my career took off from there. And, luckily, I married a jockey/racehorse trainer, so I have the best of both worlds!

WHAT IS THE MOST SATISFYING ASPECT OF YOUR JOB?  I love working on a client proposal and feeling confident that we are the best choice for the job, then getting hired and knowing that I contributed a small part in helping the now-client understand that too.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING MARKETING AS A CAREER?  I’d say marketing is many things to many people. You can focus on digital marketing or branding or content development or events or proposal writing or public relations or development or many other things. The profession can suit all kinds of skills. My favorite type of marketing position is what I have at ROCK, where I wear lots of hats and get to engage in a little bit of everything.

"I love working on a client proposal and feeling confident that we are the best choice for the job, then getting hired and knowing that I contributed a small part in helping the now-client understand that too."

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING AT ROCK?  I have the same response to this question as all of my coworkers have so far…the people. It would be a lot of time to spend with people whose values and ethics don’t align with mine so, luckily for me, ROCK is full of fun, decent, skilled people.

WHAT BEHAVIOR OR PERSONALITY TRAIT DO YOU MOST ATTRIBUTE YOUR SUCCESS?  After galloping extremely valuable 1,000 pound racehorses day in and day out for so long and worrying about them like I’m their parent, very little can cause me stress in the world of marketing!

WHO HAS INFLUENCED YOU MOST WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR CAREER?  I’ve been lucky to be surrounded by some strong characters, but I’d say my mom, who never missed a day of work in her 50 years of nursing, and to every crazy idea I ever came up with said, go on and do it, just finish college…which I did…eventually!

"It doesn’t matter what task you are given, do it well, and eventually someone will notice."

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED?  It doesn’t matter what task you are given, do it well, and eventually someone will notice.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP?  I wanted ride horses professionally, which I did, for nearly 20 years.

TELL US ONE THING (AT LEAST!) THAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?  I love to travel, and so do my husband and daughter, and we have a long list of destinations! High priorities are Uruguay/Argentina/Chile and East Africa.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT WOULD SURPRISE US?  I’m a burgeoning beekeeper.
